Family G are settling in well, and schooling has started this week for some of the children. The family is continuing to familiarize themselves with the bus system. The medical cards for all the family members arrived this week and the committee continues to work their way through the budgeting and finance pieces. Thank you to the Coughlin Family for covering Family G's tenant insurance for a year.

Family "G" continues to settle into Winnipeg beautifully.
Thank you to the volunteers who are proactively assisting with this family's transition. Also, a HUGE shout out to those who have donated. We are deeply grateful as is Family "G".
There are two items that the family is in need of at this time. One is a meat grinder, the second is we need monetary donations for the family so they can purchase and look after their transportation needs. The volunteers on the ground are requesting our community make these donations through the CanadaHelps link. We are grateful for those who have donated bus passes but because of the rising costs of bus fares in January and the varying ages of the family the benefit of a financial donation is greater at this time rather than giving bus passes directly. This way family can manage their needs more efficiently and you, the donor, will receive a tax receipt for your gift.

Family "G" wow, settling into their new environment very well. Albeit we imagine that today was rather startling!
A few social activities were organized for Family "G" over the past two weeks. As well as some shopping for essential needs.
Their electronic equipment has been set up and one of the younger children has already managed to lock everyone out of the devices!
We are still in need of items for the family and we invite you to visit our donate page on the website. We also encourage you to share the site with your friends and family on your personal social media platforms.
Thank you again to the many volunteers and donors who continue to amaze us with their kindness and generosity.

The Family "G" are settling into their new environment.
This past week the Syrian community has arranged for a social gathering for the family.
They now have winter boots. A new cellphone was set up on the weekend.
The family is very grateful for all that has and is being done for them; they feel like they have won the lottery!
Thank you to all the volunteers who are assisting with the transition activities.

Several of our committee members were deeply moved on Tuesday night when our family of seven finally arrived after a long journey at the Winnipeg Airport.
For this week we arranged for a close family member, who settled in Canada several years before, to be in Winnipeg during this critical transitional time.
We thank all those who were on hand to welcome the family, assist with transportation, and who provided a warm and delicious meal upon their arrival at their new home.
Over the next few weeks several volunteers will be on hand to assist the family with their settlement activities such as registering their children for school.
Many residual items remain to be acquired. However, we immediately require a blender for their food preparations. If you are in a position to provide any of these, please do check the sign up website ( https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a4aa8ab23abf49-spcrefugee ) As an update we received news today that a computer is being donated. We are grateful for this gift.
Technology is playing a greater role in our experience this time. Google translator has come in handy over the past few days! We have organized this website as a means of communications between our partners and our greater community.

Set up of the home continues this week. If you can spare an hour or two on Sunday afternoon, we could use your help from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Please consult with your email for a message from Bonnie Warketine containing the details.

Hi everyone! So last week Bonnie and Cathie (with the help of Lisa and Christopher) found and secured a home for the family for one year. The new landlords have been nothing short of amazing and are excited to be part of welcoming the G family. *
This week we have been meeting to get ready to greet the family at the airport and take them to their new Canadian digs. This includes getting our volunteer lists and teams together to accomplish the following:
For a super helpful and current Winnipeg-centered guidebook to settlement and settlement checklist go to: Manitoba Association of Newcomer Serving Organizations (MANSO).
*Note: One of us signed the tenancy agreement as guarantor and on behalf of the family who are the tenants. The tenancy agreement will be transferred to the family shortly after they arrive, and one of us will stay on the contract as Guarantor.
Past Lessons Learned Tip: If securing housing in advance of a family's arrival, see if the landlord is willing to include a contingency clause to release you from the tenancy agreement in the event that the sponsored family-for whatever reason - fails to arrive in Canada (for circumstances beyond your control).
